Observation Towers

What is this strange object that keeps popping up here and there along the coast?

Come to find out that this is one of thirteen observation towers that were built during World War II to help spot the location of an enemy ship.  If you feel like climbing over 100 steps, you can reach the top.

But just looking at the steps made me dizzy.

While we were in the bunker, our tour guide explained how the towers were used to locate the exact location of an enemy ship in the Plotting Room.  Slide ruler anyone?
